Influence of Canal Lining on Water Seepage in Kazerun Irrigation Canals Using Two Direct Measurement Methods

Abstract

Canal lining decreases the canal seepage in irrigation canals. There are few studies on the influence of irrigation canal linings on the seepage decrease rate in the literature. In this study the influence of irrigation canals lining on decrease of seepage in Kazerun plain is evaluated. Seepage was measured in three irrigation canals before and after lining using ponding and inflow outflow methods. T-test was used for statistical analysis and comparing canal seepages or seepage measurement methods. Results showed that the concrete canal linings decreased the seepage to about 94.7 percent. This decrease is equal to 0.342 cubic meters per day per square meter of canal which is considerable. The difference between two seepage measurement methods was not significant from statistical aspect. However, the difference between the seepage in traditional and lined canals was significant. Therefore, canal lining in the studied region could be effective in canal seepage decrease in traditional irrigation canals.
