Abstract
This study used a Specialized Software Package called DrinC (Drought Indicators Calculator) to investigate meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought indicators in Mahabad Plain located in West Azarbaijan province. Two recently developed indices (RDI and SDI indices), standardized precipitation index (SPI) and standardized precipitation, evapotranspiration index (SPEI) were used. The results showed that the 12-month index is the most suitable scale for all drought indices in monitoring drought and wet periods. Comparing the time series of SPEI and SPI drought indices during the statistical period showed that in the 12-month time scale, the difference in the behavior of the two indices increases in terms of the severity of the index. The reason for this difference could be the sensitivity of the SPEI index to changes in precipitation and the inclusion of the potential evapotranspiration parameter in this index. Investigations showed that the RDI index has almost the same trend as the SPEI index. The changes in the SDI index during the statistical period also showed a similar trend to the SPEI index. Hydrological drought usually does not occur at the same time as meteorological drought and occurs with a delay compared to them; Because a longer time is needed before the reduction of precipitation can show its effect on the components of hydrological systems such as surface currents and soil moisture. In general, the results showed that the DrinC software package includes useful tools that help to meet the needs of a wide range of decision-making cases. This software may be used in various applications such as drought monitoring, evaluating the spatial distribution of drought, examining climate scenarios, etc.Knowledge and understanding of the nature of drought indicators through studying and comparing the results of different drought indicators allows decision-makers and managers to better understand the onset of drought and mid-term and long-term planning.
