This study investigates the water productivity and nitrogen productivity of three rice varieties in physical, economic, and virtual water terms through different irrigation and fertilizer treatments. The experiment was conducted in a split plot design based on a randomized complete block design with three replications at the Rice Research Institute of Iran located in Guilan, Rasht province. The main factors involved in this experiment included irrigation management at the following four levels: flood irrigation (I1) and alternate irrigation treatments of I2, I3, and I4 that involve alternate irrigation with irrigation intervals of 7, 14, and 21 days, respectively. In addition to the main factors, the subfactors involved include different rice cultivars at three levels of certified local Hashemi, M5, and M12 varieties at three levels of nitrogen fertilizer including 60, 80, and 100 kg N/ha. The results of this study showed that the M5 cultivar enjoyed the highest physical water productivity with 100 kg N/ha nitrogen fertilizer at the 21-day irrigation interval. Under severe water scarcity during the crop season, rice yield at a 14-day irrigation interval may outperform that at the 21-day irrigation interval in terms of physical water productivity; however, in terms of economy, the former was followed by a reduction in performance compared to rice yield at the 7-day irrigation interval. In this study, the certified Hashemi variety of rice with the 7-day irrigation interval and 100 kg N/ha treatment in Guilan province showed satisfactory physical water productivity and, also, the highest economic yield. According to the results of this study, using alternate irrigation at the 7-day irrigation interval would save 285 million cubic meters of water in the Sefidroud irrigation and drainage network.
